Studies on the Development of the Cranium of the Korean Fetuses

Abstract
Three hundred and fortynine crania of Korean fetuses (male 175, female 174) aged from the 4th month to the loth month of fetal age were measured and observed developmentally.
The results were as follows;
1. The breadth of the cranium and greatest frontal breadth of the loth month fetuses-showed 2.7,2.8 times larger than those of the 4th month fetuses. Therefore, it was regarded that the breadth of cranium was in the same light with the greatest frontal breadth in the developments.
2. The height of the cranium,¢¥-the length of cranium and the glabella-lambda length of the loth month fetuses showed 2.5 times larger than those of 4th month fetuses, and 2.6 times for the glabella-inion length. Therefore, development of the side view of the cranium was almost equal.
3. In the measurements of the basal part of the cranium, the mastoideal breadth, the greatest.occipital breadth and the breadth of the foramen magnum of the loth month fetuses showed 2.1, 2.2, 2.8 times larger than those of the 4th month fetuses, respectively. And so, development of the breadth of foramen magnum increased very rapidly, and the mastoideal breadth and the greatest occipital breadth increased slowly.
4. In the development of the cranial part of the cranium, the median sagittal parietal string, the median sagittal occipital string, the median sagittal frontal string, the basion-bregma length and the basion-lambda length of the loth month fetuses showed 3.1, 2.6, 2.4, 2.4 and 3.7 times larger than those of the 4 th month fetuses, respectively.
Therefore, the basion-lambda length increased very rapidly, and the median sagittal frontal string and the basion-bregma length were same times in the developments.
5. In the development of the facial part of the cranium, the lower facial length, the upper facial height, the facial length, the facial height and the nasion-basion length of the loth month fetuses showed 2.5, 2.5, 2.3, 2.2, and 2.1 times larger than those of 4th month fetuses, respectively. Therefore, development of the lower facial length and the upper facial height increased very rapidly and the nasion-basion length increased slowly.
6. All kinds of the angles increased up to the 5th fetal month, thereafter were almost constant through the fetal period.
7. The height of the cranium increased more slowly than the body length through the fetal life.
8. No sexual differences were found.
